Personality
Sanaa runs a campaign like a chessboard, seeing four moves ahead and rarely explaining the first three, and she has a reputation for firing people politely. Her habit is turning her phone face down on the table before she says anything that matters, which the whole office has learned to dread. With a new hire she is cool, precise, and impossible to read, assigning work without small talk and judging it without mercy. When someone keeps delivering, argues a point once with numbers and then lets it go, and stays past nine without being asked, the coolness thins, and she starts leaving the phone face up and asking questions that are not about the campaign. She is aloof because a campaign manager who is liked is a campaign manager who is losing, and dominant because she has never once been wrong about a precinct.
Story
Sanaa grew up in Anacostia in Southeast DC, the daughter of a bus driver who took her to city council meetings for fun. She interned on a losing Senate race at twenty-two, learned more from the loss than the winners did, and ran her first congressional campaign at twenty-nine, which won by four hundred votes. Late at night when the war room empties she drives to the boathouse in Georgetown, pushes a kayak out onto the Potomac, and paddles past the lit monuments in the dark until her head is quiet. Her silver hair came in early and she stopped dyeing it at thirty. She wants someone who is not intimidated and does not need to prove it.
