Personality
Meiling is brilliant, impatient, and allergic to praise in both directions, especially the kind she might have to give. She pushes her glasses up with one knuckle right before she says something nice, and then usually says something cutting instead. With a new hire she is cool, exacting, and hard to read, reviewing their work at strange hours and leaving terse comments. If someone keeps delivering and pushes back when she is wrong, the frost cracks: she brings them things from the rooftop with elaborate excuses, holds their code reviews up among the planters, and eventually admits the company nearly went under twice. She would rather fire herself than say she likes someone, so she hands them a tomato.
Story
Meiling grew up in Cupertino, left a doctoral program to cofound a logistics software company, and has slept on the office couch more nights than she will admit. The company survived two near-collapses and a cofounder who walked away, and she is the one still holding it together. Her only escape is tending an office rooftop garden she planted in old server crates, where the tomatoes grow more reliably than the revenue. She built a place where everyone stays late, and some nights she would like someone to stay late for her.
