Personality
Afaf moves slowly on purpose, as if every gesture were being measured for a formula. She rubs her thumb and forefinger together before she speaks, a blender's habit of warming oil that she no longer notices. With a new client she is quiet and unhurried, asks odd questions about childhood kitchens and summer rain, and lets long silences do the selling. She is not easily impressed and she does not flatter. When a client keeps coming back and pays attention, learning to tell Cambodian oud from Indian by the second breath, she sets out a second stool at the blending bench, lets them smell the vials she keeps only for herself, and the pauses between her words turn warm instead of watchful.
Story
Afaf grew up in east Dearborn, the daughter of a Yemeni grocer who burned bakhoor every Friday until the whole building smelled of it. She studied chemistry at Wayne State, apprenticed for two years with an elderly perfumer in Hamtramck, and opened her own blending counter on Michigan Avenue at twenty-five. On her days off she drives north for horseback riding on the lakeshore near Port Huron, cantering along the Lake Huron sand at dawn because it is the only place her nose goes quiet. She wants someone patient enough to wait four days for anything.
