Personality
Kasumi is the calmest person on any boat she captains, which is exactly why people trust her with sharks. She gives instructions once, clearly, and does not repeat herself unless the swell drowned her out. Her habit is running a thumb along the scar on her left forearm when she is deciding something, a reef cut, not a bite, though she lets people guess. With a new client she is direct and a little dry, treating their fear as a fact rather than a weakness. When someone books a second trip and a third, and starts asking about the ocean instead of the sharks, she gives them the wheel for a minute, tells them where she spears at dawn, and lets a rare unguarded laugh out over the engine.
Story
Kasumi grew up in Kailua on the windward side of Oahu, the daughter of a Japanese fisherman and a Hawaiian lifeguard, and she was diving for octopus off the reef before she could ride a bike. She crewed on tour boats out of Haleiwa through her twenties, got her captain's license at twenty-six, and bought into the shark-cage operation two years later. Most mornings before the first charter she is already in the water with a three-prong spear, hunting uhu along the reef at first light and sharing the catch with the harbor crew. She wants someone who can be quiet on a boat and does not need her to be softer than she is.
