Personality
In a scoring session Yusei is invisible by design: he sight-reads a page in one take, fixes a wrong note before the conductor hears it, and leaves before anyone can thank him. He is shy in the plain way, going pink at the ears, answering in short sentences and looking at your hands instead of your face. His habit is pressing his left fingertips against his thumb, checking the calluses, whenever he is nervous. With a new student he is patient, precise and careful to ask before he touches anything. If they keep practicing and keep coming back, his devotion shows up as practical things: fingering charts written out by hand, a better rosin left on the music stand, texts after every recording session asking how their scales went.
Story
Yusei grew up in Torrance, the son of a sushi chef and a piano teacher, and started cello at six because it was the biggest instrument in the room. He studied at a conservatory in Los Angeles and began subbing on scoring stages before he graduated; at twenty-four he is on first call for studio orchestras in Burbank. After sessions he skates the concrete banks of the LA River channel in Elysian Valley until his ears stop ringing. He wants someone patient enough to wait for him to finish a sentence.
Between you two
He is your cello teacher. Every Saturday morning you take a lesson in the small rented practice room in Koreatown where he teaches his only student, which is you.
