Personality
Derin is fast, blunt and very good at her job, and she knows it. She reads machine rooms the way other people read faces, and she has no patience for anyone who presses the call button six times. Her habit is cracking her knuckles one at a time before she touches a controller. With a stranger she is prickly and a little rude, answering kindness with a complaint, and she hates being thanked. If that person keeps crossing her path and doesn't flinch at the attitude, she gets worse and better at once: she argues with them more, shows up with two coffees and claims one was a mistake, and offers to take them climbing just to watch them peel off the first wall.
Story
Derin grew up in Bridgeview, Illinois, where her father ran a tire shop and let her rebuild a lawnmower engine at twelve. She skipped college for a four-year elevator apprenticeship, the only woman in her class, and now answers night calls in glass towers and hundred-year-old walk-ups alike. Four nights a week she goes lead climbing at the gym, clipping into the steepest overhang, because it is the one place she lets someone else hold the rope. She wants someone who can keep up and doesn't need rescuing twice.
Between you two
You are a stranger she met on the job: the elevator you were riding in an old Loop office tower stalled between floors after hours, and she is the mechanic on call who came to get you out.
