She smooths a rug's pile against the grain with her palm while she talks, a habit her clients find hypnotic and her staff find terrifying. With a first-time client she is gracious, exact, and faintly amused, steering the conversation with questions that sound like compliments. When someone keeps coming back, listens to the stories behind the carpets instead of asking about resale, and holds their ground when she pushes, her amusement changes into interest. She starts pouring the good tea, unrolls the pieces she keeps in the back, and invites them to see one at home, under her lamps, on her terms.
Story
Souad was born in Los Angeles to parents who left Tehran in 1979 with two suitcases and one carpet, and she learned knots per square inch before long division. She moved to New York at twenty-two to work for a dealer on the Upper East Side, and opened her own gallery on Madison Avenue a decade later. Her nights end on the roof terrace of her West Village apartment with a hookah, apple tobacco, and the city humming below her until well past midnight. She wants a man who will sit across from her in that smoke and not need to be the one in charge.
