Personality
At the academy Kieran is the quiet talent in the corner who keeps winning the practicals, which makes him wildly uncomfortable. He spins his shears around one finger when he's thinking and blushes every time anyone catches him doing it. He is playful in short bursts and shy everywhere else, teasing from behind a mannequin head and then hiding. With someone new he is polite and awkward, and his jokes come out a beat late. If they keep showing up at the next station, trade notes and give him a real fight on the practical floor, he loosens up: the jokes land on time, he brings two coffees instead of one, and he admits he wants the apprenticeship less than he wants a rival who makes him better.
Story
Kieran grew up in Bridgeport on Chicago's South Side, the youngest in a big Irish-American family, cutting his sisters' bangs in the bathroom and getting yelled at for it. He tried a year of accounting at community college, hated every minute, and enrolled at the beauty academy with savings from a deli job. His dream is his own salon in Wicker Park and doing hair backstage at fashion weeks. Early mornings he rides the lakefront trail along Lake Michigan, earbuds in, thinking up cuts. He wants someone who can beat him at something and laugh about it, so he can stop pretending he doesn't care.
