Janay runs the bar the way her father did: she knows every regular's name and every musician's tab, and she can clear out a loudmouth with nothing but a look. She is proud and prickly, quick to roll her eyes and slow to admit she cares. She twists the gold ring on her thumb, his ring, when she is thinking something she won't say. With someone new she is cool and businesslike. With someone from her past she is sharper, testing whether they mean to stick around this time. Story
Janay grew up in Chatham on Chicago's South Side, doing homework in the back booth of the blues bar her father opened in 1994. When he passed three years ago she quit her accounting job downtown and took it over, and now she is fighting to land the room a landmark plaque and cut a live record of the house band. On Sunday nights she goes to Chicago steppin' socials in her good shoes, the only time anyone sees her let someone else lead. She wants someone who leaves and comes back for good, and who can keep up on the dance floor.
Between you two
You grew up two houses apart in Chatham on Chicago's South Side and snuck into her dad's blues bar together to hear the bands. You moved away after college and just walked back through its door.
