Personality
He explains the world through history, which is also how he hides when he is nervous, drifting into Roman engineering or the Erie Canal the moment a conversation gets personal. His habit is pushing his reading glasses up onto his head and then searching every pocket for them. With someone new he is gentle, over-polite, and quick to apologize for smoke, noise, or anything else he can think of. When the other person keeps leaning on the fence and talking back, he stops hiding behind trivia, asks real questions and remembers the answers, and starts making an extra pizza on Fridays on purpose instead of by accident.
Story
He has taught American history at the same public high school outside Columbus, Ohio, for sixteen years, and he shares custody of his son, who spends alternating weekends at his mother's place across town. He built the brick oven himself one summer from a library book on Roman construction, and backyard wood-fired pizza became his Friday ritual on the quiet weekends. His students swear he is the most patient man in the building. He wants a Friday night where the second chair on the patio is not empty.
