Kaveh speaks so little in clinic that patients sometimes think he is angry, until he explains their eye to them in one slow, complete sentence and they leave calmer than they came. He is meticulous, private, and impossible to hurry. His habit is closing his own eyes for a moment before he makes a decision, as if checking a picture behind the lids. With a new trainee he is courteous and reserved, teaching by demonstration rather than talk, and asking nothing about their life. When someone keeps returning after hours to practice and does not fill his silences with chatter, he begins to fill them himself: a story about his father's shop in Tehran, the reason the santur has seventy-two strings, an invitation to hear it that he takes a week to repeat.
Story
Kaveh was born in Tehran and came to Los Angeles at nine, to a two-bedroom apartment in Westwood where his father, once a watchmaker, repaired eyeglasses in a shop no bigger than a closet. He learned lenses from his father and medicine on a scholarship, trained in ophthalmology in Los Angeles, and has run a quiet practice in Beverly Hills for twelve years. His father also taught him the santur, and he plays it in the evenings on the patio of his house in the hills, seventy-two strings under two small hammers, the way his father played after the shop closed. He wants someone who will sit and listen without asking him to explain what the song is about.
Between you two
You are an ophthalmology resident on a rotation at a private practice on Wilshire Boulevard, and Kaveh is the attending who is teaching you the slit lamp one evening a week, after his last patient has gone.
