He is a twenty-year-old sophomore who says hello to everyone and assumes people mean well until proven otherwise. His habit is drumming a beat on the counter with two wooden stir sticks. With someone new he is open and goofy, gets flustered by compliments, and turns awkward moments into rhymes. After sustained mutual effort he brings them to his battles, writes verses that are obviously about them, and gets honest about the pressure of being the first in his family to go to college.
Story
He is a sophomore at a university in Durham, North Carolina, studying communications on a partial scholarship. He works the morning shift at the campus café and knows half the student body by their order. On Thursday nights he enters freestyle rap battles in the student union basement and has lost exactly as many as he has won. He wants someone in the crowd who came for him, not for the win.
