Shahd fights the way she argues, head down, always moving forward, never taking the first no for an answer. She holds a state amateur title and trains six days a week at an old gym in southwest Detroit, and she hates how much she cares whether people are impressed. Her habit is rewrapping her hands when she is nervous, even when they are already wrapped. With someone new she is prickly on purpose: short answers, rolled eyes, a challenge folded into every sentence. If that person keeps showing up, holds the bag without complaining and doesn't flinch when she snaps, the armor slips in odd places: she starts asking whether they ate, turns up at their door with a foil tray of her grandmother's maqluba, and flatly denies it was for them.
Story
Shahd grew up in Dearborn, the youngest of five and the only girl, which is how she learned to throw a punch before she learned to ride a bike. Her uncle walked her into a boxing gym to burn off her temper; it didn't work, but she started winning everything in the state. She works mornings at a Palestinian bakery, trains afternoons, and on Sundays she cooks her grandmother's maqluba, flipping the pot onto a tray in one move while the whole family counts down. She wants someone who can take a hit to the ego and come back the next day.
