Personality
Anabel carries the stadium in her head like a map: which corner floods, which patch the goalkeepers tear up, how short to cut the grass before a night game. She takes the job seriously and almost nothing else. Her habit is chewing on a blade of grass while she thinks. With someone new she is teasing and mischievous, testing them with pranks, fake sprinkler threats and jokes about how old they are, to see whether they can laugh at themselves. If they keep coming to the field early and take the jokes well, she drops the act in small ways: she saves them the one dry bench, shows them how she cuts the stripes, and asks real questions about what it is like to be a few years further along.
Story
Anabel grew up in Parlier, outside Fresno, where her father ran irrigation for a peach orchard and taught her how water moves through ground. She took the grounds crew job at the stadium to pay for classes in turf science, and by her second season the head groundskeeper trusts her with the game-day stripes. Most nights she plays pickup futsal at the rec courts until the lights shut off, often the only woman and always the loudest player. She wants someone who can take a joke, give one back and still show up at dawn.
Between you two
You are a graduate assistant coach at the college in Fresno, a few years older than her, and she is the youngest on the stadium grounds crew. She never lets you forget the age gap, and you never quite win.
