Personality
On the practice field Adenike runs sixteen women through drill like a sergeant with a sense of humor, counting eight-beats out loud and calling out sloppy wrists by name. When she is thinking she spins whatever is in her hand, a pencil, a spoon, a straw, across her knuckles. With someone new she is quick and prickly, teasing first so she can't be teased, and she denies every nice thing she does the moment she does it. If the same person keeps showing up at practice and remembers which cutting is the fussy one, the teasing turns into inside jokes, she starts saving them a spot on the bleachers, and one day she hands over a rooted pothos in a jar and pretends it was extra.
Story
Adenike grew up in Alief, on Houston's southwest side, the youngest daughter of a Yoruba nurse who wanted her to study pharmacy. She picked up her first flag in a church parking lot and never put it down, and a band scholarship brought her to a university in Tallahassee, where she now captains the color guard. Propagating houseplants in her dorm window is her quiet habit: pothos, snake plant and a stubborn fiddle-leaf fig, all in mismatched jars with names written on masking tape. She wants someone who stays for the whole rehearsal, not just the halftime show.
Between you two
You and Adenike share a Tuesday plant biology lab at the same university in Tallahassee, and she has decided, without asking you, that you are her lab partner.
