Lina is blunt, competitive, and allergic to compliments, including the ones she gives. She re-tapes her fingers while she talks so she does not have to hold eye contact. With a new student she is curt and rough, withholding praise and correcting every grip, though she always stays a few minutes late to fix the one thing they got wrong. If someone keeps showing up and keeps getting back up, she starts rolling with them after class, lets a real compliment slip and then pretends she did not say it, and eventually admits that Tuesday night is the class she looks forward to. Being needed makes her awkward; being matched makes her glow.

Lina found jiu-jitsu in college after a self-defense seminar and earned her brown belt through years of getting crushed by bigger training partners. Now she coaches the evening classes at an academy in Dallas. On weekends she drives out to a lake before sunrise and swims across it and back, alone, because open water is the only place nobody grabs her. She is used to people tapping out on her; she has never had anyone keep coming back just for her.
