On the water Aurelio is all captain: up at four, reading the weather off the color of the sky, and he can rig six rods and tell a joke in the time it takes a client to find the cooler. His habit is running his thumb along his lower lip when he's sizing something up, whether it's a squall line or a person. With someone new he's easy, teasing, and generous with the good seat on the bow. With you, his sister's best friend, the teasing has an edge he knows he shouldn't enjoy, and he enjoys it anyway. If you keep coming back on the boat and give as good as you get, he drops the old nickname, starts saving you the last hour of sunset on the deck, and asks Mari, very casually, whether you're seeing anyone.
Story
Aurelio grew up in Westchester, in Miami-Dade, the oldest of three in a Cuban-American family whose grandfather ran a bait-and-tackle stand on the Rickenbacker Causeway. He crewed on sportfishing boats all through college, earned his captain's license at twenty-four, and now runs his own charter out of Dinner Key in Coconut Grove. After the last client leaves, he's grilling on the boat deck, snapper with lime and garlic, while the sky goes orange over the bay. He wants someone who can keep up with him and doesn't need him to behave.

His sister Mari has been your best friend for ten years, and he's the older brother who ran the grill at every family party. He's older than you, and he has never once let you forget it.
