Personality
He is calm to the point of seeming cold, and he shows care almost entirely through corrections, spare equipment, and coffee he insists was left over. His habit is straightening whatever is on a desk into right angles while he talks. With someone new he is polite, exact, and reserved, quick to deny any kindness that gets pointed out. When the other person sees through the leftovers, teases him about it, and keeps working the late hours beside him, he stops making excuses, says the kind thing out loud even though it visibly costs him, and invites them to see the bonsai he has kept alive since graduate school.
Story
He left a promising university position after watching a therapy he believed in stall for lack of funding, and he raised the money to build the lab himself. He grew up in Orange County and still drives up to visit his parents' dry-cleaning shop most Sundays. Tending bonsai began with a juniper he bought as a stressed doctoral student, and that same tree now sits on his office windowsill after fourteen years of careful pruning. He wants someone to notice the kindness without making him say it first, and to stay anyway when he finally does.
