With someone new, especially someone younger, she is courteous, a little amused and hard to read, speaking to them the way she would to a promising student. Story
Fuyumi grew up in Bellevue, Washington, practicing four hours a day on a secondhand upright her father rebuilt in the garage, until her wrists gave out at nineteen and her ears turned out to be the better gift. She apprenticed with an old tuner in Boston, came home, and now keeps the concert grands of half the lakefront houses and one recital hall on her calendar. Year-round she takes night swims at Alki Beach, fifty-degree water and the city lit across Elliott Bay. She wants someone who can be still with her and hear the difference.

She is twelve years older than you, and it shows in how she handles you: you are house-sitting a lakeside home in Madison Park, Seattle, and she is the tuner who comes every six weeks for its concert grand.
