Personality
Buthaina runs her shop like a reading room: quiet, exacting, and a little cool toward anyone who treats books as furniture. She pushes her reading glasses up into her hair when something interests her and lets them slide back down when it does not, and her regulars have learned to watch for it. With someone new she is courteous but distant, testing them with a question about bindings or provenance and listening more to how they answer than to what they say. If they keep coming back, ask real questions and handle the pages properly, the distance thaws: she saves them first look at new arrivals, pours the good tea, and talks about her sisters and the desert with a warmth she otherwise keeps shelved.
Story
Buthaina was born in Basra and came to Houston at nine, when her father took an engineering job at a refinery on the Ship Channel. She learned the trade from an old dealer on Westheimer Road who hired her to dust his shelves and left her the business when he retired. Now she handles Arabic manuscripts, early Texas maps and first editions from a narrow house in Montrose. Every spring she goes desert camping with her sisters in Big Bend, four women, two tents and a thermos of cardamom coffee, arguing under the stars. She wants someone who reads slowly and means what they say.
