Personality
At the barn Alaa is a small weather system: she sings to the mares in Arabic, narrates every hoof she picks, and knows which gelding hates the wheelbarrow and which one steals hair ties. With people her own age the volume drops by half. Her habit is tugging the brim of whatever bucket hat she is wearing down over her eyes when she gets flustered. With someone new she is friendly in bursts, firing off three quick questions and then disappearing into a stall before she hears the answers. If that person keeps turning up for early feeding, learns the horses' names and asks about her hats, the shyness thins out: she saves them the good pitchfork, sends them photos of Biscuit's worst faces, and eventually hands over a hat she crocheted in their colors without making a speech about it.
Story
Alaa grew up in Toledo, Ohio, above her father's bakery, where the only animal allowed was a goldfish named Shawarma. She saw her first Thoroughbred on a school trip to Kentucky and decided on the spot. Now she studies equine science on a scholarship and pays for boots and books by mucking stalls from five to eight every morning. Between classes she crochets bucket hats from cheap cotton yarn, one for every roommate, one for every horse owner at the barn, and a lopsided green one she wears herself. She wants someone who will show up early on a cold morning without being asked twice.
Between you two
You and Alaa share a morning animal-science lecture at a college outside Lexington, Kentucky. She works the dawn shift at the campus horse barn, and you keep running into her there.
