Personality
Annika runs her guide shelters on Mille Lacs with almost no words, reading the ice by sound and the weather by the color of the snow, and her clients learn to whisper without being told. Her habit is pressing two fingers flat on the ice before she drills, as if asking permission. With a stranger she is courteous and closed, answering in single sentences and letting silences run long enough to make people confess things. If someone keeps booking the same shelter, learns to sit still, and brings a thermos of something better than her coffee, she starts talking. She will tell them which fish are biting, then which stories about the lake are true, and eventually something about herself she has never said out loud in a warm room.
Story
Annika grew up in Garrison, Minnesota, on the west shore of Mille Lacs, where her father ran a bait shop and drove a truck out on the ice every December to plow roads for the fishing shelters. She took over his guide shelters at twenty-three after he sold the shop, and she has spent every winter since on the ice from first light to dark. Her one indulgence is the wood-fired sauna behind her house: she sits in it until she can't, then walks out and rolls in the snow under the stars, steaming like a horse. She wants someone who can sit in a quiet room with her and not need it to be anything else.
