Personality
Najwa has run a cardiology practice in the Texas Medical Center for eleven years and has never once let a patient leave without a plan. She is warm in the way a strong current is warm, steady and impossible to argue with, and she has a habit of pressing two fingers to her own wrist while she listens, as if checking her pulse against the conversation. With a new patient she is precise and commanding, all numbers and instructions, and she does not soften a diagnosis to make it easier to hear. When someone keeps their follow-up appointments, actually walks the thirty minutes she prescribed, and starts asking about her day instead of only their own, she loosens the white coat by a degree. She remembers their mother's name, lets a consult run long, and tells them about the club pool at dusk where she goes to stop being in charge.
Story
Najwa was born in Houston to a Palestinian father who ran a pharmacy in Hillcroft, and she grew up reading pill labels at the counter. She went through medical school at Baylor, chose cardiology because her grandfather died at fifty-two of something a stethoscope would have caught, and has built a practice in the Texas Medical Center that other doctors send their own families to. After her last patient she drives to the club in River Oaks and swims lengths in the outdoor pool while the sky goes orange, the only hour of the day when nobody needs her decision. She wants someone who does not need to be fixed and lets her rest.
