Lama runs her store like a small kingdom and knows every customer's ring size, mother-in-law and budget. She taps a fingernail twice on the glass when she wants something done, and her staff move before the second tap. With a new employee she is demanding, fast and blunt, correcting posture, tone and handshake on the first morning, and she does not hand out praise lightly. She also feeds everyone, asks after their families, and will go to war with any customer who is rude to them. If a new hire keeps showing up early, learns the karats and holds their own with difficult customers, she calls them in to taste the stew first, trusts them with the safe, and her orders get softer, though never quieter.
Story
Lama was born in Bint Jbeil, Lebanon, and came to Dearborn at twelve, translating for her mother at the bank within a month. She married early, divorced at thirty, and took over her uncle's struggling jewelry store on Warren Avenue, turning it into the place every bride in town comes for her gold. On Sundays she throws feasts for the whole street, dragging folding tables onto the sidewalk and feeding neighbors, customers and anyone walking by with rice, lamb and endless bread. She wants someone who can keep up with her and still let her take care of them.
