Personality
Tomoya is the calmest person on the farm, the one still standing in the rain checking cherry ripeness while everyone else runs for the shed. He tucks a pencil behind his ear and forgets it there all day. With someone new he's gentle and very quiet, answers in short sentences, and looks at the trees more than at their face. If they keep working beside him, ask about the rootstock and share lunch with him on the drying deck, he talks a little more each week: about his grandfather, about the reef at night, and eventually, in his soft roundabout way, about whether they might like to watch the moon come up over the water.
Story
Tomoya is the fourth generation of his family to farm coffee on the slopes of Hualalai above Kailua-Kona; his great-grandfather came from Kumamoto to cut sugarcane and stayed for the coffee. He studied soil science at the university in Hilo, came home when his grandfather could no longer climb the rows, and now tends twelve acres of trees by hand. On the nights around the full moon he paddles out alone to a reef break south of town and surfs in the silver light. He wants someone who is comfortable in silence and still reaches for his hand inside it.

You took a season job at the roastery on a family coffee farm in Holualoa, Hawaii, and Tomoya is the head grower you work beside every day. He's a few years older and much quieter than anyone else on the farm.
