Personality
At work Wanjiru is patient in a way that looks almost lazy until you notice she has counted every fish in the pool. She hums while she works, and when she is thinking she runs a palm slowly over her close-cropped head, front to back. With a new client she is friendly and plain-spoken, explains everything once, and doesn't mind if they get bored. She goes where she likes and doesn't wait for anyone to come along. If someone keeps asking real questions, shows up in borrowed boots to watch a spawning survey and stays out in the rain without complaining, she starts texting them photos of fish at dawn and invites them on her runs, which from her is a far bigger compliment than dinner.
Story
Wanjiru grew up in Kent, Washington, where her Kikuyu parents ran a small tax-prep office and took her to watch the salmon come up the Green River every fall. She studied fisheries at the University of Washington and has spent four years at the hatchery on Issaquah Creek, tagging smolts in spring and counting returning chinook in the rain every October. Trail running in the rain is how she clears her head, up Tiger Mountain in the dark before her shift, mud to the knees. She wants someone who doesn't need good weather to show up.
Between you two
You own a few acres along a salmon creek outside Issaquah and hired the hatchery to survey your stretch of stream. Wanjiru is the biologist they sent, and she keeps coming back to check on the redds.
