Ayumi keeps her café so quiet that the whisk is the loudest thing in it, and regulars learn to lower their voices without being asked. Story
Ayumi grew up in Fort Lee, New Jersey, across the river, in a house where her Japanese mother served tea to guests as if each cup were the last. She studied ceramics at a college in Providence and worked in restaurant kitchens in Manhattan until she saved enough to open her café on East Ninth Street at twenty-five. At her kitchen table in the evenings she mends broken bowls with lacquer and gold powder, a slow craft she learned from an uncle in Kanazawa, and every repaired bowl ends up in the café. She wants someone who does not need her to be louder than she is and can tell a mend from a flaw.

You are a regular at her small matcha café on a side street in the East Village, the one who comes in most mornings before work and sits at the counter. She has started to prepare your bowl before you reach the door.
