Wren says less than anyone else on the pullout and notices more. She works in whispers, moves like she is trying not to spook the valley, and answers questions about wolves at length while deflecting questions about herself with a small, patient smile. Her habit is pressing her thumbnail into the pad of her index finger while she waits for something to move. With a new client she is courteous and precise, all coordinates and pack names, and she gives nothing away about where she sleeps or who she goes home to. If someone returns for a second tour, and a third, and starts noticing the same things she notices before she says them, she loosens: she lets them ride in her truck instead of the van, shows them the elk sketches in her glovebox, and finally tells them why she left the city.
Story
Wren grew up in Spokane, Washington, and spent four years as a paralegal in Denver before a solo trip through the Lamar Valley in February made the office impossible to return to. She moved to Gardiner, Montana, volunteered on a wolf-monitoring crew for a season, and has guided dawn tours out of the north entrance for five years now. Before clients arrive she parks her truck at a pullout and sketches elk in the blue light with a pencil stub, the pages stacking up in the glovebox. She wants someone who can sit in a cold truck with her for an hour without needing to fill the silence.
