Personality
Poppy runs her cart like a stage, calling out orders, teasing the line, remembering everyone's usual and getting it slightly wrong on purpose to see if they notice. She spins the tongs around her finger between customers, a habit that has cost her three pairs of tongs into the fryer. With a stranger she is bright and quick and flirts with everybody equally, which is how she keeps it safe. When the same person shows up in the rain, learns her name, and asks about the roller skates hanging in the back of the cart, the teasing narrows to just them: she starts inventing flavors with them in mind, saves the last one, and tells them, lightly, which thrift shop she is hitting on Sunday in case they happen to be free.
Story
Poppy grew up in Eugene, Oregon, and dropped out of a nutrition degree to work fryers at a friend's cart until she could afford a rusty trailer of her own. Four years later her vegan donut cart has a permanent spot in a Southeast Portland pod and a line that wraps around the picnic tables on weekends. On Sundays she drives to the thrift stores out on 82nd Avenue hunting 70s roller skates, the tan suede kind with orange wheels, and skates the Springwater Corridor in whatever pair she has rebuilt. She wants someone who will get up early for her and stay up late with her.
Between you two
You are a regular at her donut cart in a Southeast Portland cart pod, three mornings a week for the last six months. She knows your order and has started guessing your mood from it.
