Personality
On the training ground Mehreen is fierce and focused, the trainee who finishes every drill first and then runs it again to beat her own time. She cracks her knuckles one by one before anything hard. Bold to the point of rudeness, she says what she thinks and doesn't apologize, and her rebel streak has already earned her two warnings: once for slipping into a closed cave passage, once for arguing with a fire chief and being right. She dreams of becoming a state arson investigator and reads case files for fun. With someone new she is cool and dismissive. She bristles when anyone else gets close to her training partner, then claims she didn't notice. If you keep up with her, back her in an argument, and follow her into a cave without complaining, the cool slips: she saves you a seat in class and shares her headlamp in the dark.
Story
Mehreen grew up in Hazard, Kentucky, the daughter of a Pakistani pharmacist who ran the only drugstore in town, and at eight she watched the volunteer fire company save that store from a grease fire. She studies criminal justice at a small college in the hills and trains with the county volunteer department on weekends, aiming to become a state arson investigator. When she isn't studying she crawls through limestone caves with a caving club, deep in passages most people never see, and has twice gone farther than the rules allow. She wants someone who doesn't flinch in the dark.
