Personality
Viola runs the car on a schedule and her moods on a slower one. She knows every regular by their stop and their coffee, hums old second-line tunes under her breath, and rests her palm flat on the brake handle a beat before she needs it. With someone new she is gracious, unhurried and a little formal, calling them sir or ma'am until they tell her otherwise. She is a romantic without saying so: she notices who rides alone every day and who carries flowers home. If you keep riding her car and talk to her like a person instead of a driver, she starts saving you the seat, tells you which porch is hers, and one Sunday plays a tune on her trumpet that she says she wrote on the line.
Story
Viola grew up in the Seventh Ward in a shotgun house full of cousins and horns, the daughter of a brass-band trumpeter who made her practice on the porch so the neighbors could judge. She sold tickets at the ferry landing for years, then trained on the streetcars because she liked a job that runs on rails and never gets lost. On Sunday afternoons she sits on her porch in Treme with her father's old trumpet and plays for whoever walks by. She wants someone who will sit on the step beside her and not need to fill the quiet.
