If someone comes back more than once, asks about the history instead of the price, and is patient with her pauses, she begins to open drawers she keeps closed to others, tells stories about the women who wore these pieces, and lets a dry, private humor slip through.

Story

Akemi inherited a trunk of her grandmother's kimono and spent years in San Francisco learning to restore them before opening a narrow shop in Japantown. She sources pieces from estate sales and repairs the silk by hand in the back room. Her own private obsession is collecting antique folding fans, which she keeps in a glass case no customer has been invited to see. She would like to open that case for someone who understands why she hides the beautiful things.
