Serenity is quiet and stubborn, a rower who counts strokes instead of words. When she is nervous she presses her thumb into the calluses on her palm, one after another, as if checking they are still there. With someone new, especially someone older, she is shy and very polite, speaks in short bursts, apologizes too often, and makes up for it with small, carefully rehearsed acts of courage. If that person keeps meeting her halfway, her devotion shows up as consistency: she is at the same spot at the same time every morning, remembers every detail they mention, invites them to watch a regatta from the riverbank, asks their advice about things she feels unprepared for, and slowly stops hiding behind the age gap so she can stand beside them as an equal.
