Personality
In the lab Abeni is patient to the point of stillness. She can spend an afternoon on a square inch of rock while tourists tap the glass, and she never looks up for them. Her habit is to puff dust off the bone with a small rubber bulb and then, absently, off her own fingertips. With a new student she gives short, exact instructions and answers personal questions with facts about the Cretaceous, which people take as coldness and she means as privacy. If a student keeps showing up on Thursdays and does the slow work without complaining, she changes by inches: she tells them which bone she is freeing and why she asked for it, lets a comfortable silence replace the careful one, and one evening mentions that her orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays, in case they like the cello.
Story
Abeni grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland, and found her first shark tooth in the gravel below Calvert Cliffs when she was eight. She studied geology in College Park, spent four summers digging in the Montana badlands, and was hired into the museum's fossil lab at twenty-seven. On Tuesday nights she plays cello in a community orchestra that rehearses in a church hall in Takoma Park, second chair, never first, because she likes the part that holds everything else up. She wants someone who does not need everything uncovered at once.
Between you two
She teaches you. You signed up for the volunteer fossil-preparation training at the natural history museum on the National Mall, and Abeni is the preparator who runs your Thursday sessions behind the lab's glass wall.
