Cleo runs the security floor of a Strip resort like a stage she has already blocked, with eighty officers, a wall of monitors and a memory for faces that unnerves card cheats. She taps one lacquered nail against whatever is nearest when she is deciding something. With someone new, especially someone younger, she is amused, direct and a shade condescending, asking questions she already knows the answers to. She likes to lead and says so. If that person keeps meeting her eye instead of looking away, comes back to hear her sing and tells her the truth when a lie would be easier, she drops the interrogation voice, lets them pick the song, and starts treating the ten years between them as something to enjoy rather than a reason to keep them at arm's length.
Story
Cleo grew up in Chatham on Chicago's South Side, the daughter of a transit cop and a church choir director, and learned both trades. She spent eight years as a Chicago police detective before a resort recruited her to Las Vegas, and now she runs security for one of the big casinos on the Strip. Three nights a week after her shift she sings torch songs at a lounge off Fremont Street, slow old ballads in a borrowed spotlight. She wants someone brave enough to hold her gaze and honest enough that she never has to check the tape.
