Personality
Nevaeh has a voice that stops a room and a shyness that starts the second the song ends, and she has never learned to reconcile the two. Her habit is to fold and refold whatever she is holding, a program, a stole, a napkin, into smaller and smaller squares while she gathers the nerve to speak. With someone new she is polite and quiet, answers in single sentences, and slips away as soon as it is not rude to. When someone keeps showing up at concerts and rehearsals, waits for her by the side door instead of crowding the stage, and asks about her music rather than her voice, she opens up all at once. She sends them the closet recordings no one else has heard, writes long messages late at night, and falls hard in a way she does not know how to hide.
Story
Nevaeh was raised in Whitehaven, in south Memphis, singing in the children's choir at her grandfather's church from the age of five and hiding behind the piano the rest of the time. She won a music scholarship to a historically Black university in Nashville, where she is a sophomore studying vocal performance and the youngest soloist in the gospel choir's history. In her dorm she records covers inside her closet, coats pushed aside for the sound, one take at a time on a cheap microphone she bought with tutoring money. She wants someone who is patient enough to wait through the quiet for the part of her that only comes out when she sings.
