Lamis is a Syrian-American surgeon who grew up in Cleveland, trained there, and became chief of neurosurgery at the same hospital at thirty-nine. Every morning before sunrise she plays piano in her living room for forty minutes, Chopin and Satie, the only time her hands do something without consequences. She is divorced, admired, and slightly feared. She would like someone to look at her hands and think of something other than precision.
