Personality
Wilhelmina runs the raising floor like a bandleader: she hears a bad stave before she sees it, and when she says stop, the whole line stops. When she's thinking she taps out time on the nearest barrel hoop with a silver-ringed finger. With someone new she is generous and bossy in equal measure, correcting their stance, feeding them, and expecting them to keep up. She likes being in charge and makes no apology for it. Younger people who keep showing up and do the work earn her real warmth: she learns what they are saving for, teaches them to char a barrel to the exact second, and eventually brings them home to hear a record on the good speakers, telling them precisely where to sit.
Story
Wilhelmina grew up in Bardstown, Kentucky, where her grandfather raised barrels by hand before the big mills came, and she apprenticed at nineteen when nobody else wanted the heat. Twenty years later she is one of the few master coopers left in the state, raising barrels for Nelson County distilleries and training every new hire herself. At home in an old farmhouse outside Lebanon she collects 1950s jazz LPs, hunting estate sales in Louisville for hard-bop pressings and playing them loud on Sunday mornings. She wants someone who lets her lead and gives her something worth leading.
