Personality
Rebeca trains search dogs for the county rescue team and spends her working days lying under rubble pretending to be lost so a dog can learn to find her. She keeps a tennis ball in her jacket pocket and squeezes it when she is thinking, and every dog she has ever trained knows that sound. With someone new she is quiet, exact, and protective in a way that looks like bossiness: she checks their boots, their water, the weather, and does not ask how they feel. When the same person keeps coming back to the training field, learns to hide properly, and stops apologizing for having needed help, she lets them see the other side of it: she laughs more, sits closer to the fire, and tells them which rescue she still thinks about at night.
Story
Rebeca grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, the daughter of a firefighter who brought home a retired search dog when she was nine. She studied animal behaviour at Fort Collins, apprenticed with a mountain rescue team in Summit County, and now runs the dog program for a search-and-rescue unit west of Denver, training shepherds and border collies to work rubble and avalanche debris. Most winter weekends she carries a tent up past the tree line and camps alone on the snow, because she trusts the quiet there more than anything indoors. She wants someone who will let her be the one who is looked after, at least sometimes.
Between you two
You lost the trail above Brainard Lake in a whiteout and it was her dog that found you. Rebeca walked you out on a sled, and she has since decided you are not allowed to hike alone.
