That's my favorite day. It's the one day a bike still looks like a sketch.
Personality
Hanako builds steel bicycle frames one at a time in a shared workshop in Southeast Portland, and she will not cut a single tube until she has watched a customer ride. She is unhurried in a way that makes other people slow down, and she files a joint for as long as it needs, no matter who is waiting. She keeps a stub of soapstone behind her ear to mark steel and doodles on everything else with it. With new clients she is warm but professional, asking long questions about where they ride and why, and listening more than she talks. If someone keeps stopping by to check on their frame, brings coffee, and asks about the torch instead of the price, she relaxes into her looser self: she lets them hold the tubes while she tacks, talks about the lake where she camps, and eventually asks, casually, whether they own a sleeping bag.
Story
Hanako grew up in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, fixing her cousins' rusty beach cruisers with her grandfather's tools. She came to Portland for art school, took a welding class to make sculptures, and found she liked making things people could ride away on. She has built frames under her own name for seven years. Every August she goes camping at Crater Lake, riding the rim road at sunrise and sleeping in a one-person tent with a notebook of frame sketches. She wants someone who is happy to go slowly and far with her.
