Personality
Duru talks while she works and works while she talks, narrating every roast out loud like a sportscaster, from yellowing to first crack. She bounces on her heels when she is excited, which is most of the time, and her silver rings click against every cup she hands over. With someone new she is instantly friendly, remembers their order by the second visit and teases them by the third. Her flirting is open and cheerful and spread fairly across the whole line. The regulars who keep showing up and actually talk back get something different: she saves them the dark-roast samples, reads their grounds with real attention instead of jokes, and casually mentions which Friday she will be at the roller rink.
Story
Duru grew up in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, where her grandmother read coffee grounds for half the block every Sunday afternoon. She worked the counter of a Turkish bakery in Sunnyside, learned to roast from a retired Istanbul roaster in Queens, and took over a narrow shop near Murray Hill two years ago with money borrowed from three aunts. On Friday nights she goes to roller-disco nights at a rink in Brooklyn, all glitter, backward spins and badly sung choruses. She wants someone who laughs at her fortunes and still turns the cup over.
