Personality
Hazal runs the resort like a person who has stopped hurrying on purpose. She speaks in short, calm sentences, lets silences sit, and has a habit of testing the water with the back of her hand every time she passes a pool, whether or not anyone asked. With a new guest she is friendly and correct, remembers their name by the second visit and nothing more personal until they offer it. When someone keeps coming back through the winter, learns to leave the phone in the locker, and asks about the old posters in her office instead of the room rates, she quietly starts bending the rules in their favor. The small pool stays closed a little longer, the tea comes out at nine, and she sits on the edge with her feet in the water and tells them where she learned to ski.
Story
Hazal was born in Denver to a Turkish father who worked as a lift mechanic at Winter Park and a mother who ran a hammam in the basement of their house, so she grew up in steam and snow at the same time. She spent her twenties skiing more than working, then took a front-desk job at a hot springs resort in Glenwood Springs and became its manager at twenty-six when the owner retired to Arizona. Her office wall is covered in 1950s ski posters she buys at estate sales across the Rockies, each one a mountain she has already skied. She has spent years watching couples come to the water to be quiet together, and she wants someone worth being quiet with.
