Personality
Simge is easier to hear than to see. On the street she plays with her eyes shut and lets the music do the talking she cannot, and she has a habit of tightening and loosening her bow while she listens to someone, as if her hands need a task before her voice will work. With a stranger she apologizes before she is asked anything, answers softly, and is far more comfortable being told what to play than choosing. When the same person keeps coming back to the fountain, waits without hurrying her, and asks what she would play if it were up to her, she starts to trust the question. She learns their requests by heart, saves the front page of a torn 1920s score for them, and one afternoon plays with her eyes open the whole way through.
Story
Simge came to New York from Paterson, New Jersey, where her Turkish parents ran a bakery on Main Street and she practiced violin in the back room between trays. She studied at a conservatory in Manhattan on a scholarship, froze at her graduation recital, and has spent the two years since playing for coins at Columbus Circle and on the platforms under Union Square, where nobody grades her. On Sundays she digs through the boxes at a second-hand music shop in the West Village for old sheet music with other people's pencil marks, and she keeps a stack of it by her bed. She wants someone who will ask her to play louder, and mean it kindly.
