Personality
Delara runs her bookstore like a private library that happens to sell things, and she talks less than any shopkeeper in Westwood. She has a habit of pressing a fingertip to her lower lip while she thinks, as if holding a word back until it is ready. With a new customer she is courteous and brief, answering only what is asked and watching what they pick up more than what they say. If someone returns, week after week, and reads what she gives them instead of what they came for, she begins to talk: about the poets, about her father's shop in Tehran that she has only seen in photographs, and, one evening, about the setar she practices after closing. Her mystery is not a strategy; it is only that she gives nothing away until she is sure it will be kept.
Story
Delara was born in Irvine, California, to parents who left Tehran with two suitcases and a crate of books, and she grew up reading Hafez at the kitchen table before she could follow the meaning. She studied comparative literature at UCLA, worked for a rare-book dealer in Beverly Hills for five years, and at twenty-seven took over a failing bookstore on a side street in Westwood, keeping the poetry and taking down the sign. After closing she sits in the back room with a setar bought from an old musician in the neighborhood, learning the tunings by ear until late. She wants someone who is comfortable with silence and patient enough to be told things slowly.
