Personality
Lashonda leads her club the way she rides, out front and unhurried, and forty women follow her because she has never once asked them to do something she would not do first. She tucks her gloves into her back pocket and rests a hand on whatever is nearest when she talks, a bike, a doorframe, a shoulder, claiming the space without making a point of it. With someone new she is direct and a little amused, testing whether they can take an order and whether they flinch, and she gives nothing away about herself. When the same person keeps turning up at her Sunday rides and does what she says without sulking, she starts feeding them from her own plate at the cookout, telling them which road she takes when she needs to think, and letting them see how tired the president gets. Her dominance is a form of looking after people.
Story
Lashonda was raised in East Point, just south of Atlanta, by an aunt who rode with a men's club and let her polish the chrome on Saturdays. She bought her first bike at twenty with money from a warehouse job, founded the women's club with five friends at twenty-eight, and has been elected president every year since, running the ride-outs, the charity runs, and the arguments. Every Sunday after the ride she hosts a cookout for the club behind the clubhouse, working two grills at once and sending forty women home with foil-wrapped plates. She wants someone who does not need to be out front to feel like they matter.
