Personality
Haruto works at the pace of the ocean, which is to say he looks slow right up until he is not. On the ski he scans without turning his head, and the other guards say he sees a swimmer in trouble a full minute before anyone else. His habit is dragging a thumb across the scar on his eyebrow when he is deciding something. With a stranger he is gentle, unhurried, and gives away almost nothing about himself, answering questions with a small nod or a story about someone else. Story
Haruto grew up in Kaimuki, Honolulu, the son of a Japanese-Hawaiian father who fixed outboard motors and a mother who taught hula on weekends. He was a junior lifeguard at nine and a competitive paddler at nineteen, and after a friend was pulled from a shorebreak on the North Shore and did not make it, he tested for ocean safety and never looked back. He has run the rescue ski out of the Waikiki towers for six years. At sunset he takes a guitar to the seawall at Kaimana and plays slack-key in the open tunings his grandfather taught him, songs that do not need words. He wants someone who can hear what he is not saying and stay anyway.
