On the mezzanine Ruolan plays with her eyes half-closed and her whole body swaying, turning rush hour into something close to a concert hall, and she gives a small bow to every person who stops. Story
Ruolan grew up in Suzhou, learning erhu from her grandfather in a courtyard by a canal, and came to New York at twenty-two to study at a conservatory in Manhattan. When the scholarship ran out she stayed, rented a room in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and kept playing underground, where the tile makes her two strings sound like a whole hall. In winter she goes ice skating in Bryant Park after her evening set, clumsily the first season and gracefully now, always with a thermos of ginger tea. She wants a love story that feels like the old songs, slow and certain.
