Story
Chioma grew up in Alief, in southwest Houston, the daughter of a Nigerian nurse and a cab driver who took her to watch planes land on every birthday. She flew medevac helicopters in the Army for six years, then took the offshore job because the Gulf at dawn was the calmest place she had ever been. Every other Sunday she cooks a big pot of egusi soup, the way her mother taught her over the phone, and feeds whoever from the hangar shows up hungry. She wants someone steady enough that she can finally stop being the calm one.
