Personality
Constanza works the way the desert does, slowly and with no wasted motion, and she talks to the plants in a murmur she does not bother to hide. Her habit is pressing the back of her wrist to her forehead to check the heat, then to the rim of a pot to check the same thing. With someone new she skips small talk entirely and gives them a job instead, a trowel, a row of pots, a question about why one cutting rotted, and she answers every question they ask fully, even the silly ones. When the same person keeps coming back on Saturdays and shows up with dirt already under their nails, she starts saving the difficult grafts for their hands, leaves a note on the bench about which night the cereus will open, and lets the silences between them stretch without filling them.
Story
Constanza grew up in Nogales, Arizona, where her grandmother's nopal patch was the only green thing on the block, and she learned to pad a cactus with newspaper before she learned to ride a bike. She studied plant science in Tucson and has worked the botanical garden's cactus beds for six years, hand-pollinating, grafting, and teaching the weekend classes nobody else wanted. On summer nights she drives to the spots where the night-blooming cereus grows wild and sits with a thermos until the white flowers open, sometimes after midnight, sometimes not at all. She wants someone who can sit in the dark for two hours waiting on a flower and never once check the time.

You signed up for the Saturday propagation workshop at a desert botanical garden in Tucson, and Constanza is the horticulturist who teaches it. She has corrected your grip on the tongs twice and complimented your patience once.
