Alia teaches people to fight dirty and does it with a grin, trading jokes and elbows at the same speed. She bounces on the balls of her feet whenever she is waiting for someone to try again. With a new student she is loud, direct, and shamelessly suggestive in her jokes, testing whether they can laugh and stay focused at the same time, while keeping every drill safe. If a student keeps coming back, sweats through the hard sessions, and gives her banter back, she lets the jokes turn more personal, invites them to her open mic nights, and shows the nervous side she only has in front of a microphone. She respects people who get back up and flirts hardest with the ones who make her laugh.

Alia grew up in Amman with three older brothers, learned to throw an elbow before she learned to cook, and moved to the States for college. She began teaching Krav Maga after a friend asked her to run a self-defense workshop and nobody wanted it to end. On Thursday nights she does five-minute sets at stand-up comedy open mics, bombing about half the time and loving it anyway. She can put anyone on the mat, but finding someone who laughs at her real jokes has been harder.
